What do fashion designers do? (My thoughts vs the reality)

Fashion designers. (my imagination vs reality)

My first perception on the job of the designers was quite funny, as at the first i believed that this job is a very relaxing and extremely easy one. But after my research i realized that this job is not going to be an easy one, here also both the level of competitions and tasks are going to be really high. I had in mind that this job is going to be like;

•  Being a fashion intern means i will be rubbing elbows with celebrity clientele and sitting front row at NYFW.

• Applying for fashion jobs or internships are simple , all i need is to demonstrate my love for clothes.
• My social life will be full of fabulous parties and gorgeous people.

• I thought there will be unlimited parties, many functions and many decorated events to attend, somehow it is true but to reach this level many works should be done

But after reading books about fashion and after some great researches done my perspective towards this artistic job had changed completely.

 What i learned about there roles and responsibilities.

To create the best, most successful styles, fashion designers study and learn from what other designers create. After researching trends and other designers’ work, fashion designers sketch their own designs, choose the colors and fabrics and oversee the final production of their creations. Apparel designers create casual wear, suits, sportswear, formal wear, outerwear and maternity and intimate apparel. Footwear designers specialize in shoes and boots, and accessory designers produce handbags, belts, scarves, hats, hosiery, eye wear and jewelry.

The fashion design process usually takes 18 to 24 months from the conception phase to the final production of the designs. The process typically follows the following steps:

1. The designer researches current fashion and predicts the season’s future trends. For instance, popular clothing styles, colors and fabrics.
2. The designer chooses the styles and fabrics to use in his or her own designs.
3. The designer and his or her assistants create prototypes of the garments, made from cheaper materials and fabrics. Models try on the prototypes and sewers and tailors make adjustments if needed.
4. The designer and his or her assistants create samples of the designs, made in the actual materials. These samples are marketed to retailers at fashion or trade shows.
5. After retailers place their orders for the designs, they are manufactured and distributed to stores.

A fashion designer’s involvement in the design and creation of a garment depends on the amount of career experience and the size of his or her company. In large firms, the lead fashion designers create designs, choose colors and fabrics, and oversee the technical designers, pattern makers and sewers.

In a small design firm, a fashion designer takes on more of the technical duties such as pattern making and sewing in addition to the creative and design aspects. High-fashion, or haute couture, designers are often self-employed and create custom designs for their clients or to sell to retailers. Well-established designers sell their creations at expensive prices, but it can take many years to create a loyal client base.

Successful fashion designers may also work in the entertainment industry. Stage productions, television shows and motion pictures all require costumes that accurately represent characters, time periods and settings. These fashion designers research appropriate styles and create or purchase the appropriate apparel while staying within the costume budget.

After graduation, many fashion designers find work with retail stores, manufacturers, and design services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists wholesalers as the largest employers of fashion design graduates, as 29% of fashion designers are employed through apparel merchant wholesalers.

• What is the future job demand outlook for fashion designers?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the job demand for fashion designers may go through little to no change between 2010 and 2020. Jobs in manufacturing are expected to decrease, while jobs in specialized design firms are expected to increase. They also predict a growth in jobs for self-employed fashion designers. Although there are not expected to be many new job openings, those with formal fashion education, a strong portfolio, and internship experience are expected to have an easier time finding work. So from now we must be able to give our best as our portfolio would have a great impact on our work.

“Every day is different depending on where you are in developing a collection,” Jill explains. “One day could be filled with research, and the next analyzing and developing final looks, and the next meeting with different vendors deciding on trims and fabrics. Research is a huge part of being a fashion designer that one might not think about when first deciding to go into it.”

To be a successful fashion designer, fashion has to be your entire life.
“It may sound silly because it is just clothing,” says Jill, “but you really do have to eat, sleep, and breathe fashion. You have to analyze every design you make and make sure it is the best it can be. You need to have an intuition and eye for design that cannot always be taught.”
“It can be very stressful and fast-paced at times,” she adds.

Because of the many television shows focused on the world of fashion, Jill believes that it is harder to break into the fashion world now more than ever.
“It’s become very exposed to people who might not have thought about fashion design before,” she explains.

• Fashion Designer’s Future Ambitions

“I would love to either move to Europe to work for one of the major fashion design houses, such as Prada” says Jill, “or to have my own small business where I can find my niche in the market and run with it.”

Meeting the right people is key, because along with most art-relate jobs, people need connections to get anywhere in fashion.
